Thank you to all who gave your support.

We want to share a fun and healthy event we participated in recently. Some people run for their health, and others run for a cause. On Sunday, April 28 a number of supporters of Cleaning for Kids ran for both. The day started cool and sunny for the Marin County Half Marathon 5k and 10k, sponsored by the Sustainable Sports Foundation.

The runners ranged in age from 8 to 58. Cleaning for Kids volunteers handed out water at Aid Stations or directed the runners.

One runner, John Skinner, admitted, “What distance running is to me now is getting through that resistance, that voice in your head that says ‘you can’t do that anymore. You’re a 58-year-old man.’ So, I have to stop listening to that guy in my head.”

“There is always a reason not to do something,” Skinner continued, “so having something to train for gives me an incentive. I will say, this is one of the hardest courses I ever ran, with 1,500 feet of elevation, but I trained in the hills of Fairfax, so I got to hammer hill at the end and blew by those 20-year-old runners and that felt really good. That and running for a great cause.”

Mark Buchl ran with his 14-year-old son and shared that it was a tough run, but well worth the effort. “It was a beautiful day, Cleaning for Kids got some great press, and my son and I will never forget this day. It will definitely go down as one of the highlights of our lives.”

Laughing he added, “It was tough, and I hated it for much of the race, but when we were done, it felt so good. You can see it in our before and after shots.”

Preparing for a marathon takes effort and dedication. Genie Ohashi said, “It’s always great to have a reason to get up early and catch the sunrise. When you couple that with fun, enthusiasm and energy, it’s amazing. This is my first 10K run. I’ve never done this before. So, joining the Cleaning for Kid’s Team gave me a reason to train, get healthier, more fit and to challenge myself.”

A portion of the funds raised will be shared by Cleaning for Kids and two other local nonprofits. A special thanks to all the runners and volunteers who made this event a real success!
