Why Green, Eco-Friendly House Cleaning in 2019?

In earlier blogs, we’ve talked about how you can make your own cleaning products. But why are so many people turning to green cleaning, with services that promise the use of organic, eco-friendly products?

The benefits to organic, green cleaning?

Why Green, Eco-Friendly House Cleaning in 2019?Families today have many priorities to balance. Shortcuts and easy answers are always a temptation. We don’t want to spend extra time on a project, if we don’t have to and some house cleaning products promise quick cleaning solutions. Yet, they do it with harsh chemicals. So, the risk to a family’s health could cost more than money.

  1. Cleaner Environment

As the recent wildfires in Sonoma, Napa and Butte counties demonstrate, the air we breathe is fragile and precious. Any steps we can take to keep our air free of toxins will help us and the planet. Harsh chemicals used in cleaning products also end up in our water, so the less we use them, the better off we are.

  1. A Healthier Home

Marin families have always been in the forefront of seeking solutions to live healthier, fuller lives. Their embrace of organic, green cleaning is no surprise. We know that ridding a home of toxic chemicals, like those found in household sprays and laundry detergents can improve your indoor air quality.  Whether you are concerned about your health, that of your children, your pets or your aging parents, eco-friendly solutions can help reduce allergy and illness producing irritants.

  1. Safer for Children, Elders and Pets

Children, elders and pets are more vulnerable to the toxic effect of harmful chemicals. According to the National Safety Council, poisons are lurking in kitchen cabinets, hallway closets, basements or garages. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state we should keep toxic products, like cleaning solutions, in their original packaging. Rather than keeping them out of the reach of curious children, it is safer to keep them out of your home entirely. If you aren’t sure, take a very close look at your household cleaning products, including:

  • Laundry packets
  • Floor and furniture polish
  • Drain and toilet cleaners
  • Oven cleaners
  • Glass, wood and metal cleaners

They may contain ammonia, chlorine, lead, formaldehyde, sulfuric and phosphoric acids, lye, and phenol. The containers will probably show warnings about how the cleaners may irritate eyes, burn skin and cause respiratory harm. Found in a number of air fresheners, formaldehyde, is a highly toxic agent. Phenol is used to kill bacteria and fungi, and is a chemical found in disinfectant and antiseptic products, mouthwashes and throat lozenges. Phenol in large amounts can cause skin burns, irregular heartbeat, liver damage, and death.

Not all ingredients are required on household cleaning products. Unlike drug products, retail cosmetics and food; cleaning products get a pass, with a few exceptions. The good news is, most eco-friendly, green products list their ingredients, so you know what you are bringing into your home.
