Tips to Live Organically

In a lot of the houses we clean in around Marin, we notice our clients have cellular shades. Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb blinds, require a gentle approach to avoid damaging the delicate fabric. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean them effectively:

  • Dust Removal:
    • Begin by fully lowering the cellular shades. Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner or a handheld vacuum to gently remove dust from the shades. Start from the top and work your way down, ensuring you cover both sides of the shades.
  • Spot Cleaning:
    • If there are any stains or spots on the shades, you can spot clean them using a mild, non-toxic cleaning solution. Mix a small amount of mild detergent or liquid dish soap with lukewarm water.
    • Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the solution and gently dab at the stains until they lift. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing vigorously, as this can damage the fabric.
    • Once the stains are removed, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away any soap residue.
  • Rinsing and Drying:
    • After spot cleaning, rinse the affected areas with a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining soap residue.
    • Allow the shades to air dry completely before raising them back up. Make sure they are fully dry to prevent mold or mildew growth.
  • Deep Cleaning:
    • For more thorough cleaning, you can soak the shades in a bathtub filled with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent. Gently agitate the shades in the water to loosen dirt and grime.
    • After soaking, rinse the shades thoroughly with clean water to remove any detergent residue. Then, gently squeeze out excess water and allow the shades to air dry completely before reinstallation.
  • Maintenance:
    • To keep your cellular shades clean between deep cleanings, regularly dust them using a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner or a handheld duster.
    • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on cellular shades, as they can damage the fabric and compromise their appearance – plus they are not good for you and your family.

By following these steps, you can effectively clean your cellular shades and keep them looking fresh and new for years to come.
