Tips to Live Organically

Deep cleaning your refrigerator is an important task to maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen environment. Here’s a step-by-step guide utilizing only green and organic products to deep clean your refrigerator the Supreme Clean way!

Materials Needed:

  • Gloves
  • Mild detergent or dish soap
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Microfiber cloths or sponge
  • Old toothbrush or small brush
  • Empty spray bottle
  • Cooler or insulated bags (to temporarily store perishables)

Steps:

  • Empty the Refrigerator
    • Remove all items from the refrigerator. Check expiration dates and discard any expired or spoiled food.
  • Turn off and Unplug
    • If possible, unplug the refrigerator to save energy during the cleaning process.
  • Remove Shelves and Drawers:
    • Take out all removable shelves, drawers, and trays. Wash them in warm, soapy water. If they are dishwasher-safe, you can use the dishwasher.
  • Clean Interior:
    • Mix a solution of one part mild detergent or dish soap with two parts warm water.
    • Wipe down the interior surfaces, including the walls and ceiling of the refrigerator. Use a sponge or microfiber cloth.
  • Clean Seals and Gaskets:
    • Gently clean the rubber seals around the door using a mixture of water and mild detergent. This helps maintain the effectiveness of the seals.
  • Clean the Exterior:
    • Wipe down the exterior of the refrigerator with a damp cloth. Pay attention to handles and any buttons or controls.
  • Clean the Condenser Coils:
    • Refer to your refrigerator’s manual to locate the condenser coils. These are usually at the back of the refrigerator. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a coil brush to clean the coils.
  • Deodorize:
    • Mix a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water in a spray bottle. Spritz the interior of the refrigerator and wipe it down with a clean cloth. This helps neutralize odors.
  • Clean the Drain Pan:
    • Locate the drain pan (usually beneath the refrigerator) and clean it with a mixture of warm water and mild detergent.
  • Check the Freezer:
    • If your refrigerator has a freezer compartment, repeat the cleaning process for the freezer. Defrost and clean the freezer shelves and walls.
  • Replace Shelves and Drawers:
    • Once everything is dry, replace the shelves, drawers, and trays.
  • Plug In and Turn On:
    • Plug in the refrigerator and turn it on. Adjust the temperature settings as needed.
  • Return Food Items:
    • Put back the food items, organizing them neatly. Consider using storage containers or bins to keep things organized.
  • Maintain Regularly:
    • Wipe down spills promptly and regularly check for expired items to maintain a clean refrigerator. This also makes deep cleaning much easier!
