Tips to Live Organically

The longer days of summer are here and with it, many routines have gone out the window…I mean, it’s summer after all! Despite the change in seasons and our schedules, there are some simple ways to keep your home fresh and clean for the season. We recommend choosing one of these a day – the time commitment is small but the impact is big!

  • Deodorize with Citrus: Instead of using chemical air fresheners, place slices of citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, or grapefruits in a bowl of water and leave it out on your kitchen counter or in other areas of your home to naturally freshen the air.
  • Refresh Your Mattress: Sprinkle baking soda on your mattress, let it sit for a few hours, and then vacuum it up. This helps eliminate odors and freshen up your mattress for a better night’s sleep.
  • Clean Ceiling Fans with Pillowcases: Slide an old pillowcase over each fan blade and gently pull it back, trapping the dust inside. This way, you can clean the blades without spreading dust all over the room.
  • Use Vinegar for Hard Water Stains: Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle, and spray it onto hard water stains on faucets, showerheads, or glass surfaces. Let it sit for a few minutes, scrub with a toothbrush, and rinse with water for a sparkling finish.
  • Freshen Up Your Garbage Disposal: Drop a few ice cubes and a slice of lemon or lime into the disposal, then turn it on and run cold water. The ice helps clean the blades, and the citrus scent leaves your disposal smelling fresh.
  • Keep Windows Streak-Free: Mix equal parts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle, and use this solution to clean your windows. Wipe with a microfiber cloth or a crumpled newspaper to avoid streaks.
  • Microwave Cleaning: Fill a microwave-safe bowl with water and a few slices of lemon. Microwave it on high for a few minutes until the water boils and creates steam. Let it sit for a minute or two, then carefully remove the bowl and wipe down the interior with a sponge or cloth. The steam helps loosen food splatters and makes them easier to clean.
