PHTHALATES

Phthalates are often found in home cleaning products and other products that contain fragrance. While the exact effect of Phthalates is still unknown and is being heavily researched, they have been linked, among other things, to cancer, birth defects, and hormone disruption. By law, companies only have to list ingredients that are “chemicals of known concern”, therefore, when a company uses fragrance, they claim it’s a selling point and makes their product unique – and then do not include all ingredients. More than 3,000 chemicals are used to produce fragrance: some to mask and others to create a scent. Thus, when a product does include fragrance not from natural oils, it’s best to watch out.

TRICLOSAN

Triclosan is typically found in home antibacterial soaps and cleaners. It has been shown to cause hormonal disruption often related to thyroid as well as asthma and other allergies in children, when exposed. 

COAL TAR DYES

Coal Tar Dyes are synthetic dyes that are used to change the color of a product. They are found in soaps, laundry detergents, and all-purpose cleaning products. They are known to be a human carcinogen, which means there is a potential to cause cancer. To identify if Coal Tar Dyes are in your products: look for names that may be preceded by FD&C and D&C. Other names include: P-phenylenediamine, coal tar solutions, naphtha, estar and benzin B70.
